Subterranean Termites Management

An effective termite control always begins with the inspection. Although some detection devices can help, the inspection relies almost exclusively on Visual search and Observation by Experienced termite inspectors.

There are various techniques available in termite management; each will have their own advantages and limitations. Knowing which options to use in a particular situation is crucial and it will involve a lot of factual findings.

Termites Management Techniques:

Soil Treatment
Soil treatment involves the application of termiticide in the soil. Termites attempting to penetrate through the treated soil are either killed or repelled. It can be achieved while the building is still under construction (pre-construction) or after a structure is built (post-construction).

Although soil treatment is a key method of preventing or alleviating termite attack, it is almost impossible to achieve complete and uniform termiticide coverage around and beneath a building. As such, good construction practice is still important. Eliminating termite-conducive conditions such as excessive moisture and wood-to-earth contact will enhance the effectiveness of termiticide treatments.

Wood Treatment
Wood can be treated for termites either as a preventive measure or to eliminate existing aboveground infestations. Importantly all treated wood shall not have screw hole, cut or other opening that are conducive of termite attack.

Termite Baiting
With termite baiting, termites are attracted to a readily accessible feeding station containing slow acting bait-toxicant that is then carried back to the termite nest. Transfer of this slow acting toxicant can occur via food exchange (trophallaxis), grooming behavior, cannibalism of bait-poisoned nestmates, and/or consumption of contaminated feces. The active ingredient of Termite Bait will cause them unable to undergo molting process (skin-changing) which is essential for their development. In time, the slow acting toxicant will reduce the numbers of termites to a level that can no longer maintain the colony, the colony ultimately falls sick and dies.

Beside the ability of eliminating the termite colony, the benefits of conducting Termite Baiting are as follows:

  • environmentally friendly way of treating termite infestation
  • very low and small quantity of active ingredient (toxicant) used
  • knowledge intensive and not manual labour intensive


Cockroach Management

Flush-out Treatment
Flush-out treatment is necessary for food establishments with Moderate to Heavy infestation to reduce cockroach population instantly. This flushing technique involves the use of an aerosol-generating machine to push flushing agents deep into cracks and voids to flush deeply hidden cockroach. These flushing agents will flush them out and provides quickdown effect on affected cockroaches.

Cockroach Baiting
Baiting is one of the most recent technological advances in reduced toxic and non-toxic cockroach control. Cockroach baits consist of a toxicant mixed with a food source and is applied directly at areas where the cockroaches are hiding. Cockroaches are attracted to the baits and will die. This method targets cockroach due to their natural behaviour which ingestion of other dead cockroaches, faeces and secretion from initial affected cockroach. Therefore it provides a “domino effect” to current cockroach infestation.

Monitoring is essential step to check the efficacy of treatment conducted based on certain threshold level. These monitoring stations will be placed on strategic location whereby high chances of cockroaches crawls or harbourages. The key reasons for using traps as monitoring tools are the following purposes: 

  • To detect and identify the cockroach pests present
  • To detect low level populations before a population explosion takes place
  • To locate or pinpoint problem areas, entry points, or harbourages for targeted control measures
  • To document the effectiveness of control strategies by comparing pre-treatment trap counts to post treatment trap counts

Housekeeping and Sanitation Audit
Like animals, cockroaches need food and water to survive in and around structures. By reducing access to food and water, cockroach populations become stressed to survive in urban environments. Conversely poor sanitation, inadequate maintenance, poor housekeeping and overcrowding can create serious cockroach infestations. Therefore good housekeeping and sanitation is very important in cockroach management. Furthermore, all food debris and greases should be cleansed or minimized as possible to prevent cockroach food and harbourage. Structural defects will also be conducive for cockroach harbourage, therefore it is very important that all crack and crevices should be sealed or redesigned to eliminate cockroach harbourage.

On the other hand, we provide quality audit in order to ensure highest quality pest management is provided. In such quality audit, we will recommend non-chemical methods such as:

  • Harbourage alteration including seal up crack and crevices
  • Exclusion including proofing and interception


    Mosquito Management

    It is a true fact that complete elimination of mosquito is impossible. There are methods that pest management professionals can use to reduce a mosquito problem, but truly, mosquito control is best handled by whole community including the public health agencies.

    Mosquito Management Techniques:

    Source Reduction (prevent mosquito breeding)
    Source reduction is an essential part of mosquito control. Our main role is to identify potential mosquito breeding ground, without presence of stagnant water activity, mosquito is unable to lay their eggs. Water-containing receptacles such as flowerpots, barrels, metal cans and automobile tyres, should emptied or discarded, and accumulations of cans or tyres should be removed, recycled or buried in a landfill. Leaking plumbing and air-conditioned overflow that results in the formation of pools on the ground or in areas under the house often supports mosquito breeding. Therefore part of our service will be highlighting potential mosquito breeding ground at your premise.

    Exclusion (prevent mosquito invasion)
    It is vital to exclude mosquito invasion into your indoor premise. Adult female mosquitoes invade your premise indoor to get a blood meal for its ovipositor of its mosquito eggs. For example, tight fitting door can be installed in all openings to permit air flow but excludes flying mosquitoes and other insects. Door and window without screens must be kept shut at all times to prevent flying mosquito invasion. 

    Larviciding (mosquito larvae elimination)
    Larviciding is method to kill or eliminate mosquito larvae or any potential breeding location which can breed mosquito larvae, with chemical application. This method is to kill young mosquito generation by killing them via ingestion, contact or suffocation before they get infective and become a vector.

    Adulticiding (Thermal fogging, Ultra-low-volume (ULV) application, Barrier treatment) Adulticiding is a methodology of killing or eliminate adult flying mosquito by creating a flowable mist in the air space or contactable surfaces. There are few methods to create and spread out these mists out which shown below: 

    • Thermal Fogging – A combination of insecticide and fuel oil is being heated by thermal fogger and dispersed it out as tiny droplets into air space, as such should the active flying mosquito get contact with the insecticide droplets and therefore kill the mosquito. The fuel oil acted as carrier in this method.
    • Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) Application – A designated machines or devices with nozzles that break up diluted insecticide into microscopic droplets. No fuel oil is burned and no smoke comes out of the nozzle because the carrier used is water based. Both thermal fogging and ULV application are temporary measures as they kill only those adult mosquitoes that comes into contact with insecticide droplets. Both of these methods do not leave any residual effect on targeted surfaces.  
    • Barrier Treatment – A treatment of treating resting areas of mosquito at outdoor as well as indoor. This treatment will targets outdoor resting areas such as inside tree branches and vegetation, tall grasses and its natural habitats, and indoor resting areas such as external and internal wall, indoor plants, furniture and dark places in the premises. As barrier insecticide applied onto above-mentioned surfaces, whenever adult mosquito rest or get contact with it and kill them instantly. Therefore it provides an invisible protection for house-owner before this flying vector get into your premise.

    Flies Management

    The flies can be categorized into 5 separate groups based on their habits: Filth flies, Small flies, biting flies, Overwintering flies and Gnats and Midges. The groups of flies that we commonly encountered are filth flies (e.g. house fly, blow flies, bottle flies, etc.), small flies (fruit flies, phorid flies, moth flies, etc.) and gnats and midges.

    Control strategies vary depending on the group of flies we encounter. Generally, here are the components of a good fly management program:

    Sanitation (remove food source to prevent breeding)
    It is very important that good sanitation and housekeeping in order to prevent flies breeding. Without susceptible food and drink source, flies are unable to breed in or nearby your premise. For an example, it is good practice that cleaning and removing rubbish from your trash bin on daily basis, and keeping all food in ziplock bag or container.

    Cultural measures (practices that minimize potential fly breeding sites)
    As for cultural measures, there are some good practices that are suitable for us to adapt in our daily lifestyle such as scrubbing floor traps to prevent sewer flies breeding in it. Cleaning your bathrooms from organic material and debris on weekly basis of will discourage flies breeding. Besides that, replacement or repairing broken tiles in kitchen or toilet areas are able to minimize breeding ground for flies and other flying insects.

    Exclusion (measures to prevent fly entry)
    Exclusion is application to prevent fly entry via crack and crevices, gaps, entrance, doors or windows, etc. There are a few exclusion methods that we could apply such as:

             i.        Installation of insect nettings

            ii.        Installation air curtains

           iii.        Installation plastic strips

           iv.        Installation door brush or plastic door strips

           v.        Seal up all crack and crevices from the surface of the wall and roof top

    Mechanical control (the use of devices to trap flies)
    Mechanical control refers the application and placement of devices to trap flies or other flying insects. One of the commonly used type is insect light-trap or fly catcher. This trap works based on nature of flies and flying insects which are attracted to ultra violet lights. Thus it is crucial to determine location of this insect light traps. Placement of this trap is mandatory for some places such as Food and Beverage areas, Food Processing Factory, Pharmaceuticals Plants, and other chemical sensitive areas. 

    Insecticide treatment (baits, ULV misting, etc.)
    Insecticide or chemical treatment usually presumed as an outbreak infestation or sudden high occurrence of targeted flying pest in the areas. Treatment using insecticide is able to kill and knockdown flying insects as well as their respective larvae or eggs. An ULV misting is able to kill all indoor or outdoor flying insects in an effective manner with living residual effect on the surface. As for usage of insecticide baits for flying insects, it could be a remedial or preventive measurement. These fly baits should be placed under control or secured environment to ensure safety for human being and untargeted animals.

    Rodent Management

    For a rodent infestation happened, we are required to conduct a comprehensive investigation on current issue. From there, we are able to determine type of rodent management program suitable for the rodent infestation. It is also means that each rodent infestation is required a tailored-made rodent management program, which consists various methodology or combination. These are some of the rodent management method shown:

    • Rodent Trapping
      Rodent trapping method is the only application allowed in internal areas, as well as external areas. It served as trapping and monitoring tools for a rodent infestation ground. Every rodent trap has its own function and served in different area. Placement of rodent trap must be follow up as frequent as possible to prevent dead carcasses in the premise for prolong period. The occurrence of dead carcasses will develop pathogenic microorganisms.
    • Tamper-proof Rodent Bait Station
      The application or placements of rodent baits or rodenticide are strictly prohibited in indoor areas. The rodenticides are only allowed in externally areas whereby it should be placed in a Tamper-proof Rodent Bait Station. This station is made of strong material which is able to last long in different environment including external force, weather and etc. This rodent station is able to protect rodent baits from external intrusion. Therefore this station must be secured on the ground and locked for maximum safety from public. 
    • Burrow Baiting
      Burrow baiting is an application that requires identifying and locating active rodent burrow so that sufficient rodenticide or rodent poison is applied into the rodent burrow. Thereafter this rodent burrow must be cover up and follow up to ensure sufficient rodent bait to eliminate the current rodent colony. After a few follow up to ensure rodent elimination, this rodent burrow should be sealed permanently to prevent other animals’ harbourage.

    Bed Bugs Management

    Bed bugs infestation became common pest problem for our neighborhood especially at hotel, motel, hostel, dormitory, hospital and some housing areas. Bed bugs are easily brought in by human travel, furniture, clothes and etc. Bed bugs eradication is difficult because they are extremely good in hiding and are able to survive without a blood meal up to 15 months. Bed bugs biting become serious inflammation in cluster of blisters, some of this inflammation can cause sensitivity and itchiness.

    • Inspection - A thorough inspection is mandatory to find out affected areas. Faecal marks and bloody spots are visible at areas such as pillow cases, bed sheets in bed rooms and other areas whereby people sat and sleep. Other areas to inspect are behind electrical switch plates, behind wall posters, between books and magazines on shelves and in racks, behind pictures on the wall, inside light fitting, etc
    • Blanket Spraying and ULV Treatment - Blanket spraying is a treatment spraying at all affected areas with specific chemical for bed bugs. Ultra Low Volume Treatment is an important process to penetrate those crack and crevices in premise. This chemical is being brought into deep areas whereby bed bugs are hiding in it.

    Book Lice, Dog Ticks and Cat Fleas Management

    These pests became domestic pest in urban society. The book lice is more of nuisance and unpleasant for homeowners. However the dog ticks and cat fleas are threat to pet lover because these pests are able to pass on pathogenic vector via biting and infestation. For these pest above-mentioned, the control method as using suitable chemical with blanket spraying and ULV treatment at affected areas.
